Academic Proofreading and Editing

There is a real difference between proofreading and editing, and most students need the second. Proofreading catches typos. Editing fixes the sentence that has been running for four lines, the paragraph that makes three points at once, and the tone that reads like a text message in an assignment.

What we correct

• Grammar, punctuation and spelling, including UK, US and Australian conventions.
• Academic tone. Removing informal phrasing and over-claiming, adding appropriate hedging.
• Sentence and paragraph structure. One idea per paragraph, with a clear topic sentence.
• Clarity and flow. Signposting and transitions so an argument is easy to follow.
• Consistency. Terminology, tense, capitalisation, numbers and formatting.
• Referencing. In-text citations and reference list checked against your required style.

What we will not do

We will not rewrite your argument or insert content that is not yours. Editing improves how your ideas are expressed; it does not replace them. If a section does not work, we tell you why and you rewrite it. That is the part that makes you better at this.

Guidance, not ghost-writing
